Burg was one of the major cities of the counts of Berg, who granted certain freedom rights in 1436, but Burg did not become a city until 1825. The lion in the arms is the lion of Berg. The arms are based on a 16th century seal. The lower part of the arms represents the old water mill in the Wupper. The colours of the lower part were in the last century still black on gold, but were changed during this century. Besides the wheel, there is one seal with a fish in the lower part. It dates from 1556.
